World of Warcraft # 22 Will Rox Your Sox

Stay tuned this Monday, May 18 at 5pm EST (11pm Paris).  Hardcore Warcraft lore fans are going to get a loregasm when they read the short and simple solicitation for World of Warcraft # 22 (Wildstorm) on sale August 15.  Subscribe or locate a comics shop here.

During my interview with Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson, I asked this very question and they were very elusive, and their face showed they could barely resist not answering it.  Well, the wait is over.  All the roads lead to World of Warcraft # 22, and it ignites a new plotline for the future of the World of Warcraft MMO expansions.

On the DC Unlimited action figures side of things … I can see some collectors are going to be extremely happy. Ain’t I a tease? /lol

Sideshow Diablo III Overthrown Nearing Final Stages

I had a few words with Sideshow Collectibles President and CEO Greg Anzalone and Production Manager Brant Bridges tonight and there are good news for those hardcore Diablo III fans that are into collectibles.  The Diablo III OVERTHROWN diorama is nearing its final stages. We will show you the photos once the painted version is ready.  New products based on the Blizzard games are not out of the question, but nothing as soon as we wish.

Below is an image of the unpainted Diablo III diorama.

What’s the Sideshow Collectibles background?

Greg: Sideshow was born from the belief that we could create more interesting, more detailed, more highly collectible limited edition figures, for a global audience.  Our belief has been proven true, but we continue to be surprised by the global appeal of our products.

Medievaldragon: Are there plans to introduce more dioramas based on the Starcraft II, Diablo III and World of Warcraft licenses?

Brant: Yes, we are hoping to do more Blizzard products.  Nothing in the immediate future, but we do have some ambitions.

Medievaldragon: What is the status on the Diablo III OVERTHROWN diorama (Barbarian) The final painted version hasn’t been unveiled yet.

Brant: You’ll see screenshots of the painted OVERTHROWN diorama soon. It’s KILLER.

Medievaldragon: Are you eventually developing a polystone diorama for each of the five Diablo III classes?  i.e. the Witch Doctor and the Wizard?

Brant: It’s possible, but not definite.

Medievaldragon: How was that first approach between Sideshow and Blizzard Entertainment?  The first product was the exclusive Tychus Findlay Terran Marine diorama—already painted by the time Blizzard officially announced StarCraft II, which means you were already on this at least a year earlier.

Greg: Our guys are Blizzard fans and play WoW more than they should because they’re dragging their sorry asses to work in the morning with a videogame hangover.  So it was only natural that we explore other potential products.

WoW: Arthas Makes # 23 NY Times Bestselling Fiction Hardcover List 5-03-09

Very, very surprising.  Last week, we reported straight from the publisher Simon & Schuster, Inc. that World of Warcraft: ARTHAS by Christie Golden had reached # 16 in the New York Times Bestselling Fiction Hardcover List—barely in 4 days after its launch.  On the week ending May 2, ARTHAS has gotten into the List again at # 23 position. You can check it out here.

The Lich King continues to take over the world.

Starcraft Frontline Vol. 3 Preview: War-Torn

With Starcraft II Beta so close to starting any minute, read today’s opt-in updates, Tokyopop is preparing to launch StarCraft Frontline Vol. 3 on July 14. The manga contains four stories based on the StarCraft universe, and may contain lore from the StarCraft II single-player. Remember when I asked Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson if the Umojan Protectorate had their own Ghost Program?—watch the video interview.  They smirked and for a good reason.  This preview reveals in part that.

You must add this book on your must-have wishlist. One of the stories within this manga is titled War-Torn by writers Paul Benjamin & Dave Shramek.  Art by Hector Seville and Letters by Michael Paolilli.

Michael Paolilli (Tokyopop Production Artist) and Kasia Piekarz (Tokyopop Marketing & Merchandising Manager) provided us exclusive scans of StarCraft Frontline Vol. 3 to share with you.

Warcraft Legends Vol. 4 Exclusive Preview Scans

imageTOKYOPOP has provided us exclusive preview scans of the upcoming Warcraft Legends Vol. 4.  Beneath you can take a look at 10 pages from the story titled FATE by Richard A. Knaak.  In this story, Trag Highmountain is a Undead Tauren character from the Warcraft: The Sunwell Trilogy.  Trag continues his journey toward Icecrown Citadel to enact vengeance against Arthas the Lich King, and to claim back his soul, to free himself from the curse of undeath.

This storyline is full of excitement.  What will Trag’s fate be?  Will he become a raid boss in the upcoming Icecrown Citadel dungeon? Or will he be a Quest NPC within Icecrown Citadel vs the Lich KIng—a la Akama / Maiev vs. Illidan? What is this mysterious ancient weapon that might destroy the Lich King? So many questions risen from this manga.  We get to see moments before the Icemist Village was raided by the Anu’bar spiders.  The previous volume showed The Bones of Galakrond prior to its desecration by the Scourge’s digging. It’s so lovely how Metzen and Neilson and their creative team make all the mangas and novels tie-in directly with the MMO’s quests and content.  You can watch our recent video interview with Chris Metzen and Micky Neilson where they talk about all their work on the manga, comic book and novels.

We also posted a few weeks ago, preview scans of the Bloodsail Buccanneers story within Warcraft Legends Vol. 4, if you would like to check that out too.  Ahoy, Matey!

World of Warcraft: Arthas is #16 in NY Times Bestselling List

As revealed last week by the book publisher Simon & Schuster, Inc. 2009 NYCC Interview: Walter Simonson & Louise Simonson on World of Warcraft Comics

I found Walter Simonson and his wife Louise Simonson at the 2009 New York Comic Con this past February 7, and took the opportunity to jump them with a few questions about the World of Warcraft comic book.  Specially by then, issue # 15 had kicked in into newsstands introducing the return of Garona Halforcen—from the novel Warcraft: The Last Guardian.  They were at odds trying to dodge the interrogation, but they were very sweet and kind to provide as much teasing as possible for those fans who haven’t yet subscribed to the official World of Warcraft comic book.

They are a very fun couple, and I loved the experience spending some minutes with them.  The future of the comic book and the MMORPG look very interesting with more focus on the Horde, and certain events yet to come that will make the Alliance and Horde clash once more.  We already saw what happened at the Wrathgate, and the continuation of that conflict between King Varian Wrynn and Garrosh Hellscream in the Secrets of Ulduar cinematic.

I am a subscriber of the comic book and know what’s going on.  The comic book # 15-18 reveal why these two adversaries hate their guts … and Garona is in part, whether accidentally or not, responsible or blamed by the conflict between the Alliance and the Horde.  Something big happened in Theramore during the second attempt to reestablish the summit between Thrall and Varian. Grab your copy to find out.  The inclusion of Garona into the MMO is imminent no doubt. In the meantime, check out my video interview with Walter and Louise Simonson to get the excitement within you rolling.

World of Warcraft: Arthas Collector’s Edition Almost Sold Out

Update: World of Warcraft: ARTHAS has made # 16 in the New York Times Bestsellers List.  The Rankings reflect sales, for the week ending April 25.  This will show up on the New York Times Bestsellers list next Sunday under the Best Sellers Fiction category. Congratulations to Christie Golden and Blizzard Entertainment !

AMAZING !!! Recently, Blizzard Entertainment and Simon & Schuster, Inc. premiered the launch of World of Warcraft: ARTHAS, Rise of the Lich King on April 21.  It is been only 8 days since it launched, and I just got word from the editor that the ARTHAS Collector’s edition is close to being sold out. If you were planning to get one, you’d better do it now! Considering there were only 10,000 copies of the Collector’s Edition, this is awesome news not only for Blizzard, the publisher and Christie, but for fans who will own the limited edition of the first Warcraft hardcover. It has a special collectible value.

Back on March, World of Warcraft: Night of the Dragon reached its fourth printing.  WoW: Arthas is very likely to follow the same trend of best sellers.  This book will impact the overall experience of fans who are preparing to face Arthas in the Icecrown Citadel. Allows you to understand the tragic life of the once noble paladin and prince of Lordaeron.  The end of the book will leave many fans in shock when you find out what transpired within the Lich King’s mind during his four years hibernation prior to the events of World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

In his dream, three entities battle for a sense of control: Arthas, Ner’zhul and the boy … who players know as Matthias Lehner (Arthas’s last remnants of humanity). Grab your Arthas Collector’s Edition while supplies last—and trust me, not many are left.

World of Warcraft: Arthas Released

The highly hyped novel by Christie Golden, WORLD OF WARCRAFT: ARTHAS, RISE OF THE LICH KING is available today at your local bookstore or online. Get yours hands on it, or get one of the 10,000 copies of the Collector’s Edition here.

Description

Frostmourne.

It was caught in a hovering, jagged chunk of ice, the runes that ran the length of its blade glowing a cool blue. Below it was a dais of some sort, standing on a large gently raised mound that was covered in a dusting of snow. A soft light, coming from somewhere high above where the cavern was open to daylight, shone down on the runeblade. The icy prison hid some details of the sword’s shape and form, exaggerated others. It was revealed and concealed at the same time, and all the more tempting, like a new lover imperfectly glimpsed through a gauzy curtain. Arthas knew the blade—it was the selfsame sword he had seen in his dream when he first arrived. The sword that had not killed Invincible, but that had brought him back healed and healthy.

He’d thought it a good omen then, but now he knew it was a true sign. This was what he had come to find. This sword would change everything. Arthas stared raptly at it, his hands almost physically aching to grasp it, his fingers to wrap themselves around the hilt, his arms to feel the weapon swinging smoothly in the blow that would end Mal’Ganis, end the torment he had visited upon the people of Lordaeron, end this lust for revenge. Drawn, he stepped forward.

The uncanny elemental spirit drew its icy sword. “Turn away, before it is too late,” it intoned.

* * *

His evil is legend. Lord of the undead Scourge, wielder of the runeblade Frostmourne, and enemy of the free peoples of Azeroth. The Lich King is an entity of incalculable power and unparalleled malice—his icy soul utterly consumed by his plans to destroy all life on the World of Warcraft.

But it was not always so. Long before his soul was fused with that of the orc shaman Ner’zhul, the Lich King was Arthas Menethil, crown prince of Lordaeron and faithful paladin of the Silver Hand.

When a plague of undeath threatened all that he loved, Arthas was driven to pursue an ill-fated quest for a runeblade powerful enough to save his homeland. Yet the object of his search would exact a heavy price from its new master, beginning a horrifying descent into damnation. Arthas’s path would lead him through the arctic northern wastes toward the Frozen Throne, where he would face, at long last, the darkest of destinies.

TOKYOPOP Michael Paolilli Talks About the Blizzard Mangas

TOKYOPOP posted a new article recently by Michael Paolilli – Production Artist—titled Michael’s Blizzard Blast, where he expresses his feelings working on the Blizzard mangas. He confesses he has been a Blizzard fan for a decade since the release of Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, was hooked to StarCraft since 1998, and has a level 80 Hunter.  It’s great to know that the people behind the books and the mangas are deeply involved in the universes prior to working on their printed projects. You can read his article at TOKYOPOP.

Blizzard Quote:
My name is Michael Paolilli, and I am Production Artist here at TOKYOPOP. I put together all of the books we produce here, in particular the Blizzard titles Warcraft and StarCraft. I am also the Creative Consultant on those titles.

It is because of those two facts that I am writing to you today, to give you a small glimpse at the work behind our books.

First I will start with a little background. I have been a HUGE fan of Blizzard’s games since back in the mid to late 90’s when i got my hands on Warcraft 2.  But the game I really fell in love with was StarCraft, and Blizzard has had me hooked ever since.  When we here at TOKOYPOP relaunched our Blizzard co-pub program back in 2008 I jumped at the chance to not only continue, but be a part of our work on these best selling series.

World of Warcraft: Night of the Dragon Reaches 4th Printing

World of Warcraft: Night of the Dragon by Richard A. Knaak was released on November 18, 2008.  In barely four months, its popularity among lore fans has been astounding. It is now on its fourth printing. These are selling like hot bread in the morning. Go grab yours while supplies last.

Richard A. Knaak has announced his participation in Dragoncon in Atlanta, Georgia on September. If you are planning to attend the event, make arrangements to get your books signed.

imageHello!

This is for those of you who have expressed previous interest in my work.  If you have received this email by accident, please let me know and you will be deleted from the list.

FIRST AND FOREMOST:  LEGENDS OF THE DRAGONREALM, a new omnibus featuring the first three novels of my series—- FIREDRAKE, ICE DRAGON, & WOLFHELM.  With beautiful new cover art and a map, this trade paperback should not be missed.  Check it out at my website:  https://www.richardaknaak.com !

In case you missed them, late 2008 saw the release of THE FIRE ROSE for Dragonlance.  Sequel to THE BLACK TALON, this novel continues the Ogre Titans Trilogy.  Golgren and the Titans vie for an artifact fashioned by the god of fire and alchemy, a deadly double-edged creation that was responsible for the downfall of their once-regal race centuries before.

Also released was WORLD OF WARCRAFT: NIGHT OF THE DRAGON.  A sequel to DAY OF THE DRAGON, the first ever WarCraft novel, NIGHT brings us back to Grim Batol, where the dragon mage Krasus returns to discover what evil has now arisen in what was the last stronghold of the orcs.

AND JUST RELEASED:  WARCRAFT LEGENDS VOL. 3!  The third anthology includes the third segment of my four part saga about the tauren Trag.  Risen as an undead, Trag struggles against the evil calling to him from chill Northrend.  Yet, he knows that if he wishes to free himself, he must face the dread Lich King there.  However, Northrend itself is full of danger…and possible allies.

Lastly, special news!  I am to be a guest of Dragoncon in Atlanta on Labor Day Weekend!  I’ll be there from the 4-6th (not the 7th).  I will be on various panels!  More news on this as the convention approaches!

Thanks for reading!

Best

Richard A. Knaak

Warcraft Aubiobooks Postponed Temporarily

A few months ago, on December,  I interviewed Dick Hill, who voiced the Warcraft audiobooks for Tantor Media Audiobooks. The books were Warcraft: Day of the Dragon, Warcraft: The Last Guardian, Warcraft: Lord of the Clans and World of Warcraft: Beyond the Dark Portal.

As many have noticed, the Tantor website no longer lists these books since early January. Without going into many details, the audiobooks are postponed until further notice.  The release of these audiobooks will be delayed for a while, but hopefully we will get an announcement of its new release dates. Note that it is not considered cancelled. Keep your hopes up.
