The Song of Liu Lang – World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria

The Song of Liu Lang - Dawning Span

The Song of Liu Lang is one of the most thrilling in-game songs in World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria. Not every World of Warcraft expansion has one of these thematic songs, but when they do — there’s usually an extensive lore attachment wrapped around them.

In Burning Crusade, there’s a quest that starts with The Lady’s Necklace, an item that drops from a Deatholme Acolyte in Windrunner Village (The Ghostlands). The quest leads you to Silvermoon City’s throne room where you have the delicate diplomatic mission to secure a friendship with Lady Sylvanas Windrunner, and eventually get her support to request Orgrimmar to accept the Blood Elves as new members of the Horde.

The necklace turns out to be an old gift given to Sylvanas by her sister Commander Ranger Alleria Windrunner. The end of the quest triggers The Lament of the Highborne (by Soprano singer Vangie Gunn) — nominated to the Best Original Vocal Song – Pop in the 6th Annual G.A.N.G. Awards. It was by far the best World of Warcraft in-game vocal song to date.

In World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, level 1-10 Pandaren players can experience a school scene by walking in into the Dawning Span’s lower room. Lorewalker Amai teaches the young Pandaren children the story of Liu Lang, while Lorewalker Ruolin sings The Song of Liu Lang in some asian-like language.

The amount of lore about Liu Lang is substantial, serving as a intro to low level players in the Pandaren starting zone: Shen-zin Su (The Wandering Isle). More of Liu Lang is learned later at level 90 through the Lorewalker faction‘s achievement system.

The lore surrounding Liu Lang is retold in the pages of Micky Neilson’s DC Comics World of Warcraft: Pearl of Pandaria graphic novel.

The video below shows you Lorewalker Amai’s teachings while Lorewalker Ruolin sings The Song of Liu Lang.
