Electric Playground visited Blizzard Entertainment to interview some of the World of Warcraft developers on the 15th anniversary of Warcraft! Miri Jedeikin takes a look back at the series with Frank Pearce (Executive Vice-president of Product Development), Samwise Didier (Senior Art Director), Cory Stockton (Lead Content Designer) explaining the evolution of Warcraft between Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Warcraft III and World of Warcraft.
Are you among the many fans who never played previous Warcraft RTS games, and decided to purchase it to learn all the lore that gave birth to World of Warcraft? If so, you should know that Blizzard’s Warcraft III Team has deployed Warcraft III patch 1.24c on the Westfall PTR server which allows The Culling (of Stratholme) to load properly. For months since the last Warcraft III patch, players were unable to play this human campaign which birthed the concept for Caverns of Time: Stratholme.
It is a key point in Prince Arthas’s life that turned him down the perilous path that led him to Frostmourne and to serve Ner’zhul the Lich King. Arthas discovered the plagued grain had reached Stratholme, and thus ordered his men to massacre the city as they would in time rise as undead. Uther the Lightbringer and Jaina refuse to participate, and for this Prince Arthas disbanded the Order of the Silver Hand.
In the process of optimizing the map editor we have made several changes to improve its usability. These updates are now live on the Westfall (PTR) and players are welcome to test the following changes:
- Fixed a problem with the “Chapter Six: The Culling” human campaign map
that was preventing it from loading.
- Fixed an issue that allowed JASS functions to return incorrect values
under certain conditions.
- Fixed an issue that caused the TriggerEvaluate native to return
incorrect values under certain conditions.
- Fixed a minor memory leak when using GroupEnum natives.
- Fixed a crash when using the CreateImage native on PPC Mac.
- Updated Mac World Editor to work with recent JASS changes.

Pocket Books invited me to witness their Blizzcon 2009 book signing event on Saturday at 4pm where Jaime Costas and her husband raffled 40 copies of the World of Warcraft: Arthas Collector’s Edition. I brought my video camera and captured most of the event. There was a large amount of fans awaiting to win one of those, but also to get their own merchandise signed by Christie Golden. I could see some World of Warcraft: Arthas (Normal Edition) and Starcraft: The Dark Templar trilogy brought by fans to be signed by the author. The place was crowded with fans that were excited to meet her.
If you recognize a friend in the two videos, let them know the link to this page. It’s available to all attendees as a memento. I was glad to be there. I realized I haven’t taken photos of myself with the authors in all the events I have been attending. This time I had the chance to take a photo with all the publishers and book writers. I have been in contact with all of them quite often. It feels like family already. Watch video # 1 below, and video # 2 here.
The new minor patch for Warcraft III is now on the Public Test Realms. We encourage all Warcraft III players and Diablo II players to help test the game’s stability and some of the features fixed in this patch. The Diablo II developers are assisting the Warcraft III team to square down some critical issues. Once all is well and back to normal, the Diablo II team will resume work on the Diablo II 1.13 patch.
We’ve released Patch 1.24b on PTR (Westfall) for testing, before the actual public live.
