The two most attractive loot cards of the trio are the Purple Puffer (companion pet) and the Swift Shorestrider (mount). Both of these count toward the respective achievements: Littlest Pet Shop and the Mountain o’ Mounts.
The Purple Puffer is an in-game pet companion reward from the Bloat the Bubble Fish loot card. This pet is based on real life porcupine fish (blowfish) which has spines and swallow water or air to increase its size and bloat up as a defensive mechanism. The in-game companion pet lives inside a water bubble, similar to the Sea Pony (fished from Darkmoon Isle waters). The Purple Puffer doesn’t seem to have any sounds, or special animations such as the bloating (at the time I reviewed it). Its eyes move around every second in a different direction like a chameleon. Looks pretty nice. It opens and closes the mouth constantly, and its four fins move back and forth randomly. Very unique pet.
The Swift Shorestrider mount is an in-game mount reward from the Wasteland Tallstrider loot card. When you press the jump button while standing still, it makes a loud squeak sound — like those annoying Greater Plainstriders found near Crossroads in The Barrens . I checked up my mounts collection (110) and there’s no other Tallstrider model — making this loot card kinda unique. However, while doing my Darkmoon Faire dailies I was checking ticket prices for the new pet/mounts and noticed there’s a Swift Forest Strider for 180 tickets. If you catch the Mulgore Hatchling from the Argent Tournament Thunderbluff Quartermaster (Horde) you’ll have a nice mount/pet combo to show off. You can see a screenshot in this page of my character on the Swift Shorestrider mount with the Mulgore Hatchling pet tagging along. Very cute.
The Bag of Starfish item can be redeemed from the Throwing Starfish loot card. When you click the bag of Starfish, a cast bar is seen onscreen to create Throwing Starfish x 5. There’s a 30 minute cooldown to create the next five. When throwing the Starfish, it makes a low squishy sound effect as the starfish is splat on your friendly target’s face.
To redeem these loot cards you must type the code found on it at the following Redeem Loot page. Select the region (US, EU, etc.) and the server/realm name. If the code is valid, it will auto-generate a new code and display it on the page. That code must be copied and then pasted in-game.
Go to Booty Bay (in Stranglethorn Vale) and talk with Landro Longshot who stands outdoor on the deck mid-Booty Bay. Browse through his list of World of Warcraft TCG expansions and select the Throne of the Tides option. There, pick the appropriate loot card and paste the code provided at the official World of Warcraft Promotion Code Retrieval page.
Happy hunting! As a reminder, Blizzard Entertainment revealed at BlizzCon 2011 (Oct 20-21, 2011) plans to introduce the Pet Battle System in the upcoming World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria MMO expansion. You can read about it in our BlizzCon 2011 Panels Transcript Archive.
It would be interesting to find out what the Purple Puffer pet’s spell / abilities might be once the Pet Battle System becomes available.
Order the World of Warcraft TCG: Throne of the Tides to hunt for these loot cards.
Loot card from Throne of the Tides
1. Purple Puffer
This little puffer fish had big dreams. While the oceans are vast and full of adventure, he longed for the time he’d be able to put his little puffer fin on solid land. Those arrogant turtles, always moving between land and sea. So smug! Unfortunately for this little fish, he needs water to live. Fortunately, this is a world of magic and he travels in a little bubble of water. Now he’s free to float along in life on both land, sea, and air. Who knows what’s next for this little puffer fish. What’s ahead of him is a mystery. The important thing is that he achieved his dreams and is an inspiration to us all.
- This pet is bind-on-pickup
- Counts towards pet achievements
- Is a fish that can live on land. Crazy, huh?
2. Swift Shortstrider
Imagine, if you will, cruising along the beach on a majestic, winged creature. Okay, now imagine that it can’t fly. Now imagine it slightly less majestic, and then I think we’re on the same page. You’re riding the WoW TCG-exclusive Wasteland Tallstrider, a bird long only thought useful for the delicious buffalo wings it could produce. Well, it turns out that it can run really fast too, and since it’s so tall and sturdy, you don’t need to worry about breaking its back if you’re a tauren, orc, or draenei.
- Counts toward mount achievements
- Scales its speed to your riding skill level
The mysteries of the sea are as deep as the sea itself; mysteries like “could you throw a starfish like it was a shuriken?” have plagued our finest scholars since time immemorial. Well, guess what! With the Throwing Starfish, we can finally provide you the answers you’ve been seeking: a starfish is not quite as deadly as a shuriken, but it does stick to the face of anyone you throw it at. Good luck peeling that sucker off. Well, suckers, that is. Because it’s a starfish. Get it?
- Reusable item
- Sticks to the face of whoever/whatever you throw it at
- Throwable from 30 yards at hostile targets or 40 yards at friendly targets
Irvine, CA—December 1, 2011: Cryptozoic Entertainment today announced plans to develop and publish a highly accessible new “deck-building-style” card game based on Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft®. Designed for two to four players and featuring many of the most recognizable figures from the award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game, World of Warcraft: Clash of Champions will introduce all-new gameplay elements to the deck-building genre.
“Over the past few years, deck-building games have emerged as an exciting new area of game design and have exploded in popularity,” said Cory Jones, President of Cryptozoic. “We’re pleased to be working with the rich lore of Blizzard’s Warcraft universe to explore the deck-building genre and put our own spin on its mechanics.”
In a deck-building game, players start each match with a small pool of basic cards and build on that base by selecting new, more powerful cards to add to their deck as the game progresses. World of Warcraft: Clash of Champions adds to that structure by allowing players to take on the role of some of the most iconic heroes of Warcraft lore, including Thrall and King Varian Wrynn, and customize them with different abilities. Over the course of each game, players will defeat monsters, gain epic loot, and take on familiar raid bosses such as Onyxia and Ragnaros on their way to victory. Each box includes a self-contained game with more than 425 game cards, including oversized hero cards, hero ability cards, monster cards, item cards, and boss loot cards.
World of Warcraft: Clash of Champions will be available in spring 2012 with an MSRP of $45.00. Check out www.cryptozoic.com/games/world-warcraft-clash-champions for the latest up-to-date information on the game.

When Epic Raid Bosses like Onyxia, Ragnaros, and The Lich King are defeated, your Heroes level up! Each Hero comes with four special cards that are unique to that Hero. When your Hero levels up, you get to add one of these exclusive cards to your deck. Every game plays out differently, and every Hero provides a new, customizable game experience!

You can customize the Dungeon Deck for difficulty and your hero will level up as you gain experience. Spend those experience points improving your deck and adding cards. So, group up and strike a blow to the enemy. For the Horde! For the Alliance! For the Monsters!
“Weakness… that is all you have managed to show me. Genn, you and those other disgusting mongrels that plague Gilneas, I sought death before I would serve you again. Enter the Banshee Queen, Sylvanas. You showed your true nature when you allowed Crowley to leave with his life, and so I took yours instead. You would do well to remember all that I have done, but if you still dare to enter my keep, all you will find is the lonely silence of death.” – Lord Godfrey
“Can you not see it, brothers and sisters? There is but one way to wipe the Scourge from the face of Azeroth. The Scarlet Crusade offers you the protection that you so desperately desire, and if you will pledge yourself to us, surely we will reach our ultimate goal. Defy us, and you will be dispatched in a blaze of golden light unlike any you have ever witnessed. My father, known to many as the Ashbringer, one of the most powerful paladins ever to walk the path of the Light, fell to my hand. What hopes could you possibly have, if even he could not stand against us?” – Scarlet Commander Mograine
“Lies, greed, and deception—these are the things that my father stood against. For years, he worked tirelessly, helping to rebuild your devastated city, and what thanks did he or anyone else get for it? Nothing. What choice did they have but to turn on those who the crown favored to get payment, one way or another? Fate, it would seem, has led me down this path. Even with the murder of my father, your foolish attempts to destroy the Defias have been in vain. I am, now more than ever, my father’s daughter, and the Defias Brotherhood will rise once more…” – Vanessa Van Cleef
The Dungeon Decks are supported by the Dungeon Deck Treasure Pack. Loot equipment, allies, abilities, and epics from these nine-card treasure chests. Every card is a foil! You’ll find the dungeon bosses in tournament-legal card form. Cookie, Mograine, Godfrey, and Vanessa Van Cleef are just some of the allies you’ll be able to recruit. You’ll also find many cards that support your multiplayer dungeoneering experience as well as your one-on-one tournament duels. And for your World of Warcraft Cataclsym players out there in computerland, each Treasure Pack could hold one of these three Loot cards: the Wasteland Tallstrider mount, Fool’s Gold item, and Landro’s Lichling pet. There are 60 cards total to collect (30 common, 15 uncommon, 9 rare, and 6 epic), so start your dungeon crawl today!

During the SDCC 2011 World of Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo Swag Show panel, Cryptozoic CEO Cory Jones revealed a new World of Warcraft TCG expansion titled Throne of the Tides which introduces a third faction which includes new monster heroes and races: Naga, Murlocs, Ogres; and monster allies for your card deck. Cryptozoic is very excited about this new feature.
In addition, Cryptozoic plans to introduce a new Product known as “Dungeon Decks”, a new gameplay dynamic for small amount of players 3-5 or such.
- Automated Dungeon Decks! – Introducing a brand new raid style product!
- Level Up! – Fight your way through the dungeon, and add powerful new cards to your deck as you level up!
- Popular Dungeons! – Featuring The Deadmines, Scarlet Monastery, and Shadowfang Keep.
Cryptozoic CEO Cory Jones and Micky Neilson debunked the rumor I started (bonks-self) that there are plans to launch brand-new mangas. However, Micky Neilson and Chris Metzen acknowledged they loved to develop all these mangas with TOKYOPOP, and the door is not close for new Warcraft and StarCraft manga some time in the future when the time is right and ripe. That’s certainly a relief. Want Moar Manga.
Cory Jones: “14:28 – One of the things that we hope to do with the TCG is the idea that we need to continually innovate and create something that remains fresh and fun for our consumers. We are coming into five and a half to six years now. We’re now on our sixteenth set of the TCG. I think that’s a remarkable accomplishment. Most TCGs don’t last that long.
15:00 – But for that to be something that is a benefit, we need to continue to innovate. When Blizzard helped create Cryptozoic that was one of the big things that came out of that was they want a partner that you know do whatever it takes to make sure that part of quality is there.
15:14 – So the next set coming up is THRONE OF THE TIDES, and it’s going to be very interesting because for the first time we’ve created sort of a third faction. Not an official faction, that is monster specific. The first set will allow you to play a monster hero and you will have the nagas, the murlocs, the ogres — and the handhold that goes along with playing these monster races are incredibly fun with splashy effects, and the set will also have monster allies that you can put on your deck.
15:48 – So the way it’s going to work is you can be Horde or Alliance and throw a monster in, or be a Monster Hero and if you are a Monster Hero then you can only play with Monster Allies which is going to be a ton of fun. We are very excited about it.
16:01 – So the next thing, we’ve been lucky enough to be right next door to Blizzard and work very closely with them, and so for this very next set coming up — the Aftermath block — we are gonna actually include sort of [one on one ties (sp?)] back into the lore and the story as it’s happening.
16:16 – That has always been a challenge for the trading card game because the lead times are so long that you have to actually catch up with what’s happening in the MMO is incredibly difficult. We’ve finally after five years now been able to accomplish that with the last set of the Worldbreaker block actually included things around Cataclysm and as you can see in the last set we have actually gotten Deathwing as a Master Hero, so that was a splashy exciting card that we were able to include. That was awesome, and as we move forward, we are actually working with the lore team and with Chris Metzen to make sure that characters, in advance, that are going to be coming up in the MMO are reflected in the trading card game so that it’s a very natu ral extension of your experience with the IP in terms of learning about that lore, and for me that’s what I feel is great about all of this license because it allows you to have a much deeper connection to this property we are very very passionate about, and we want to make sure that we are one of those companies that advocates that experience, that’s a big priority.
17:15 – So one of the core elements for Cryptozoic is our model which is “Fans first”, and nothing really speaks to our “Fans first” ideal as much as all of the events we put on. We spend millions of dollars a year putting on events all around the world. We attend all of the major shows, and we make sure that they are very active; and large communities centered around the trading card game have this incredibly robust organized play program.
17:34 – Coming up for 2011, we actually have our World Championships, it’s going to be in Amsterdam. We are a global property. It’s just like the World of Warcraft MMO. We have offices in China, we have offices in Europe. We service an actual global community. One of the things we did recently was a World Cup, and we had 26 different countries represented with their own teams, it was very successful event. Everyone had a great time.
18:10 – Coming up shortly is the World of Warcraft World Championships, that’s gonna be in Amsterdam, and it has $250,000 as a cash prize pool, which is by far the biggest cash prize pool for any TCG out there. People gets very excited about that. It’s a very serious competition, and we are looking forward to see how it turns out in that event.
18:34 – Some of the things we are trying to do is to support the Brick and Mortar Hobby industry without finding someone to play a physical trading card game. So having some of those shops supported and doing great, having a place where you can go to meet up with your friends, and play some WoW TCG is incredibly important for us. We are doing all kinds of programs. One of the ones coming up are the Goblins of Anarchy Promotion. So we put out a series of four different cards and the only way to get these cards is to actually go down to a local Hobby Store and they give it to you free as a participation prize, and when you are actually going to run events when you can play with these cards on your deck, and they are not legal typically because they are wildly overpowered but it’s going to be something you can play with in these tournaments, and they are incredibly fun. The goblin cards are Power, Time, Cunning and Money. Those are the riders of the Apocalypse for the goblins.
19:35 – The WoW TCG innovated the idea of a raid deck where it was sort of a “one versus many” idea where someone would be the raid boss, you would invite friends over and you could have this sort of very interesting single experience with your friends trying to build this series of decks that could [be you as a massive raid boss], and playing all those overpowered cards and trying to beat other people is quitely enjoyable, and you would team up with other players to try to take your friend down.
20:08 – We had an incredible response to that over the course of the WoW TCG’s life. As always we try to think through how we can innovate and come up with something a little different and unique play experience. What we are doing moving forward is we are doing Dungeon Decks. So the idea of a dungeon deck is that it is a smaller experience than the Raid, but it is an automated dungeon deck. Sometimes it is hard to find a group of four people to play a trading card game with. The way that this works is that you can actually play between two and four people against the dungeon deck.
Or we could play three people with the Class Starter Deck, one of the gr eat features of it is there are rules inside the dungeon deck to level your deck up, so you’ll actually be able to get experience and then have access to new cards to add to your deck based on your deck leveling up. So you can continue on with the same deck and face all of the different dungeons: The Deadmines, Scarlet Monastery, and Shadowfang Keep. We have tons of quests for those locations, because people have such a strong emotional connections to those original dungeon experiences in WoW.
21:30 – Very excited about dungeon decks. The idea of leveing up my deck, and it is something I keep and I bring with me and I add new cards and I think about what kinda cards I want add as I level. That to me is very compelling as a huge fan of Warcraft and also as a huge fan of the TCG.

I’m not a WoW TCG player, but I can tell you for certainty this is a card YOU … MUST … HAVE. It will be part of the World of Warcraft TCG: Worlbreaker, Twilight of the Dragons set. Here is an article from the official WoW TCG that explains the importance and role of this card.
The article explains how you can combine Wild Growth for a Mend effect plus use Twinned Band of Flowers, Nourish, Faith Healer’s Boots or Apply this Twice a Day and other combos that trigger self-damage on your allies to make Wild Growth and other abilities to kick in.
Would you like to heal all of your cards at once, and a bit more over time to full health? Whoa? Fetch it, boy!

- Irvine, CA 2011—May 9, 2011: Cryptozoic Entertainment announces the creation of a new gaming convention: Epic Con! Epic Con is a traveling convention that brings the best in gaming to your local community. Epic Cons will take place across the United States, with scheduled events in 2011 in Las Vegas and Philadelphia.
“As you can imagine, the health and growth of the hobby community is incredibly important to Cryptozoic. What better way to support this community than by giving them a chance to meet up, have fun, and revel in what makes hobby gaming great… the human connection,” says Cory Jones, President and Chief Creative Officer of Cryptozoic. “In an effort to make Epic Con as accessible and exciting as possible for the largest number of gamers, we continue to invite other game companies to join us at the show. We don’t view other game companies as competitors; we view them as partners. The hobby gaming space is too small not to support any group or company spending time and money to grow the category as a whole, and as you can see with the types of games we will be supporting and the types of partners stepping up to be represented, we are totally committed to this vision.”
Free for players to enter, Epic Cons bring communities together from multiple games and different game platforms. At the heart of Epic Con is a Darkmoon Faire, a World of Warcraft® Trading Card Game event that offers everyone from competitive to beginner players the chance to participate in tournaments for big prizes or try their hand at slaying Alexstrasza, the dragon aspect. And the fun does not stop there! At Epic Con, players can participate in events for games like Magic: The Gathering, Ascension, Settlers of Catan and many more. RPG enthusiasts can group up for an adventure in their favorite campaign.
There will be board games from leading manufacturers in our Board Game Library, where for $5 you can rent a game for 4 hours. All proceeds from the library go to Child’s Play, a charity based in the game industry that has collected over 7 million dollars in donations of toys, games, books and cash for sick kids in children’s hospitals across North America. What’s more, attendees will have the opportunity to dress up as their favorite game or anime character and enter a costume contest for a chance to win exciting prizes. There will be vendors at Epic Cons where gamers can buy, sell, and trade their favorite games as well.
Space for Epic Cons is still available! Cryptozoic is inviting both manufacturers and game masters to come and run games at these Epic Cons for free. Visit www.epiccon.com for information on how to get involved or find out when Epic Con is coming to a city near you!
