PHASING TECHNOLOGY

The Battle For The Undercity is one of the many examples of Phasing Quest System technology in action.  While a level 15 is in the Royal Quarter in Undercity turning in the quest: Lament of the Highborne (sung by Sylvanas), and a level 40 player is doing the Razorfen Kraul quest from Varimathras, at that same moment and space level 74 players are smacking the heck out of Varimathras in The Battle For The Undercity.  It is not a dungeon. See, if you are flagged with the quest at level 74-80, you are phased in and all the Vendor NPCs, and players are phased out. Only those who are flagged can play alongside you.

It is the same undercity, just you can’t see the NPCs and players that aren’t flagged to the phased event. This technology has so many possibilities to progress the World of Warcraft storyline without affecting low level player quests. While a low level player is doing the Missing Diplomat he is flagged to see Lady Prestor, Bolvar and Anduin. At that very moment, a level 74 player is not seeing Lady Prestor nor Bolvar in the Throne Room. He is flagged to see Anduin and his father Varian.

BATTLE FOR THE UNDERCITY QUESTLINE

The first quest starts in Wintergarde Keep after you complete Rescue from Town Square and The Demo-gnome.  The quest that starts this epic questline is titled Into Hostile Territory.

Below some incomplete quests in the meantime.

To start the long questline toward Battle For The Undercity, go to Star’s Rest in Dragonblight. Just southwest of Agmar’s Hammer.  You will find an injured human inside a tent: Courier Lanson. He gives you the quest: Of Traitors and Treason. Deliver the letter to High Commander Halford Wyrmbane at Wintergarde Keep in Dragonblight.

Halford gives you the quest: Naxxramas and the Fall of Wintergarde—and sends you to talk to Gryphon Commander Urik at the gryphon station in Wintergarde Keep.  Urik gives the quest: Flight of the Wintergarde Defender—and provides a whistle to call forth a flying mount at level 73. It can only be used in Wintergarde and the Carrion Fields. Rescue 10 Helpless Wintergarde Villagers.

The next quest is titled: Return to the High Commander. Back to High Commander Halford Wyrmbane, he gives the quest: Rescue from Town Square. When you accept this quest, he will offer a second quest: The Demo-Gnome.  Demo-Gnome leads to a second quest: The Search For Slinkin. Slinkin’s corpse inside the Wintergarde Mine gives the quest: Leave Nothing to Chance.

Finish these two mini-questlines that split off in sub-branches:

– Rescue from Town Square
– The Demo-Gnome

… and eventually they converge back to High Commander Halford Wyrmbane … to unlock the questline toward The Battle For The Undercity Series (Alliance version). The Battle For the Undercity questline starts once you obtain the first quest out of twenty-one: Into Hostile Territory.

SPOILER: Alexstrasza in her dragon form (new model) offers an option to talk to her.  You ask: “Alexstrasza, what happened here?”—when you click the bubble in the quest window, an in-game cinematic is triggered. If you don’t want that spoiled, don’t watch the following video. Otherwise, dool.

REBORN FROM THE ASHES

Our fate is emblazoned upon our souls at birth. Bolvar’s fall, while tragic, was unavoidable.

All that you can do now is honor your hero, . Collect Bolvar’s shield from the field of battle and return it to your king. When you present the shield to Varian, tell him this: “All is not lost. From the ashes of the fallen will rise a force that will unite nations and purge the evil from this world.”

He mustn’t lose faith. Go now, (name). Your people need a hero. They need you.

(Gather Fordragon’s Shield from the field of battle at Angrathar the Wrath Gate and return it to King Varian Wrynn at Stormwind Keep in Stormwind City.)

FATE, UP AGAINST YOUR WILL

At the behest of Lady Proudmoore, I will allow a diplomatic mission to Orgrimmar to question the Horde’s Warchief, Thrall. You will assist her in this journey and keep her safe from harm. Return to me with news from Orgrimmar.

Speak to Jaina when you are ready to leave.

Assist Lady Jaina Proudmoore in Orgrimmar.  Speak to the Warchief of the Horde, , Thrall, at Orgrimmar on the continent of Kalimdor.

A ROYAL COUP

Your champion, Bolvar, died in defense of our world. The Horde is saddened by the loss of such a great hero, but the Horde was not responsible for the cowardly attacks made by Putress at the Wrath Gate. We have also lost mighty heroes because of this betrayal.

Tell your king that we will do everything in our power to bring the perpetrators of this cowardly act to justice. We will do all that we can to avoid conflict with the Alliance, but we will not hesitate to defend ourselves if provoked.

(Use the portal in Grommash Hold to return to Stormwind Keep and deliver Thrall’s message to King Varian Wrynn.)

I sent Broll and Valeera to the Undercity before you left for Orgrimmar. In fact, they’re now stationed outside the sewer entrance to the ruins, awaiting orders.

Lady Proudmoore will open a portal to our forces outside the Undercity. Go there and report to Broll. Jaina and I will be close behind.

(Use the Portal to the Undercity inside Stormwind Keep to teleport to the Undercity. Report to Broll Bearmantle when you arrive at your destination.)

Deep inside the bowels of the Undercity hides the assassin responsible for the deaths of Bolvar and our brave soldiers at the Wrath Gate.

Varian has brought the full might of the Alliance with him to assist in the take down. Join him and Lady Proudmoore in the manhunt and earn your place among the greatest champions of the Alliance!

Speak to King Varian Wrynn when you are ready.

(Assist King Varian Wrynn and Lady Jaina Proudmoore in bringing Grand Apothecary Putress to justice! Report to King Varian Wrynn should you succeed.)

NOTE: I don’t have a level 75 Alliance character to test this.  Here is a rough transcript submited by Zato and Tito from Blizzard-rus for our article.

ORGRIMMAR

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Thrall, what has happened? The King is preparing for war.

Thrall: Jaina, what happened at the Wrath Gate, it was a betrayal from within…

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: Lady Proudmoore, the Warchief speaks the truth. This subterfuge was set in motion by Varitmathras and Grand Apothecary Putress. It was not the Horde’s doing.

Lady Sylvanas Windrunner: As the combined Horde and Alliance forces began their assault upon the Wrath Gate, an uprising broke out in the Undercity. Varitmathras and hordes of his demonic brethren attacked. Hundreds of my people were slain in the coup. I barely managed to escape with my life.

Thrall: The Horde has lost the Undercity.  We now prepare to lay siege to the city and bring the perpetrators of this unforgivable crime to justice. Know this Jaina: War with the Alliance is not in our best interests. If we are forced into a conflict, the Lich King will destroy our divided forces in Northrend. We will make this right, Jaina. Tell your king all that have learned here.

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: I will deliver this information to King Wrynn, Thrall but… Bolvar was like a brother to him. In the King’s absence, Bolvar kept Alliance united. He found strength for our people in our darkest hours. He watched over Anduin, raising him as his own.

I fear that rage will consume him, Thrall. I remain hopeful that reason will prevail, but we must prepare for the worst … for war. Farewell, Warchief. I pray that the next time we meet it will be as allies.

UNDERCITY

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: What’s happened here? There are corpses everywhere… the stench.

King Varian Wrynn: Horde. By the looks of the struggle, they are here in force – somewhere. Stay alert and on guard. There’s no telling what horrors await us. ONWARD!

Note: After Putress’s death.

King Varian Wrynn: What say you now, Putress? Look around you, brothers and sisters. Open your eyes! Look at what they have done to our kingdom! How much longer will we allow these savages free reign in our world? I have seen the Horde’s world. I have been inside their cities. Inside their minds… I know what evil lies in the hearts of orcs.

Thrall: [Orcish] Mog Osh’kazil gul’rok il mog Ro’th zaga maza TOV’OSH

King Varian Wrynn: THRALL! Here? ONWARD! We end this now!

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: Varian. stop! I won’t help you do this!

King Varian Wrynn: The orcs have a battle cry: LOK’TAR OGAR! It means “Victory or death.” Fitting… To the throne room! I was away for too long. My absence cost us the lives of some of greatest heroes. Trash like you and this evil witch were allowed to roam free—unchecked.

The time has come to make things right. To disband your treacherous kingdom of murderers and thieves. Putress was the first strike. Many more will come. I’ve waited a long time for this, Thrall. For every time I was thrown into one of your damned arenas… for every time I killed a green-skinned aberration like you… I could only think of one thing. What our world could be without you and your twisted Horde… It ends now, Warchief.

ATTACK! FOR STORMWIND! FOR BOLVAR! FOR THE ALLIANCE

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: VARIAN. NO! STOP!

(Jaina freezes everyone in the room. And teleports the Alliance back to Stormwind)

Lady Jaina Proudmoore: It did not have to be like this…

Ending

King Varian Wrynn: For too long have the Horde been left unchecked. We allowed their territories to prosper and in return for our generosity they plotted and planned our demise. Peace? Useless… It’s gotten us nowhere. We have lost some of our greatest heroes ‘to “peace.” Let us see what battle brings…

Return to Northrend. Conquer it for your king – FOR THE ALLIANCE!
