StarCraft 2 Release Roundup

Asia and Europe (and all those countries in between) have been enjoying StarCraft 2 for many hours now. We’re currently less than an hour away before StarCraft 2 mania hits the US on the East Coast and then for the next few hours after that. I know MedievalDragon is currently hanging out at the midnight release in NYC, but I’m stuck here in Kansas City where things aren’t quite as interesting (and besides, I pre-ordered my copy online so I’ll have it tomorrow afternoon). I have however spent my evening looking to see what’s happening all over the Internet regarding the latest StarCraft buzz and figured I’d make a happy place here for everyone to look at when they get home from their release parties.

  • Blizzcast #14 has been released and is primarily about StarCraft 2 and the development and beta process and experience:

In our 14th BlizzCast episode, we are joined by Production Director Chris Sigaty and Game Director Dustin Browder to discuss the StarCraft II beta experience and to recap some of the custom maps and creative strategies adopted by beta testers. The developers also delve into several other exciting topics including the upcoming achievement system and what players can expect to find in both the StarCraft II single-player campaign and challenge modes once the game is released.

The highly anticipated release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty has nearly arrived. On July 27, 2010 (that’s midnight tonight!) you will be able to purchase the game, dive into its epic single-player campaign, and compete online via Battle.net. We’ve put together this handy overview of all the different ways to get StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty so you know how to get started. Just find the scenario that matches your preference below, and you’ll be off to the Koprulu sector in no time!

    • I want to go buy the game in a store: If you plan to purchase StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty at a game retailer, be sure to check whether there are any midnight release events near you. You can get your copy once midnight rolls around, after which you’ll need to activate it via Battle.net Account Management.
    • I want to buy a digital copy: Digital sales of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be available several hours after retail sales begin. Check the digital sales page to learn when they will begin in your region.
    • I want to buy a boxed copy from the Blizzard store or other online retailer: You will be able to buy boxed copies of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty from the Blizzard store at the same time digital sales become available. Once you have received your game and installed it, you’ll need to activate your copy before you can dive in.

Have fun, and we’ll see you on Battle.net!

  • Blizzard is posting fan photos from release events around the world on their facebook page. Check it out here! If you would like to submit your photo to sc2web@blizzard.com or post them on twitter using the hashtag #SC2Launch
  • One of my personal favorite comics Fox Trot created an excellent comic about the release yesterday.
  • Joystiq got an early copy of the Collector’s Edition from Blizzard *Jealous face* – and posted some great photos of what comes in it.
  • StarCraft2forum.org is running a launch day tournament – you can check out the fill details at http://tournament.starcraft2forum.org
  • Last but not least, if you’re not going to make it to a party tonight and will be picking up your game tomorrow, K-Mart might be a decent choice as anyone who purchases StarCraft 2 will receive a $20 credit.

Let us know what you did tonight by coming in and hanging out in our awesome forums. We don’t bite and enjoy the company. See you all in game!
