New York Comic Con: Chris Metzen Q&A

Posted 17th Jan 2009 07:00 PM by Medievaldragon

The video interview is now live. You can find it here.

Original story
I will be bringing coverage of the New York Comic Con through February 6-8 where I will meet editors from Tokyopop, Pocket Star Books and DC Comics. Of heavier interest to you, I will interview Chris Metzen (VP of Creative Design, Blizzard) and Micky Neilson (Senior Writer/Voice Director, Blizzard) to discuss details of Starcraft II, Diablo III and World of Warcraft pocket books lore. It’s a pleasure to interview someone I am a personal fan of, the same month Blizzplanet turns six years old.

The plan is to have this interview with the Thundergod on video for your viewing pleasure. Representing the ScrollsofLore community, Omacron will co-host the interview with me. However, this has rapidly become a communities-wide effort with support from other fansites.

Questions will also be gathered by our friendly community sites: WorldofWar.net, StarcraftWire.net, Diii.net, WoWInsider, ScrollsofLore, and WoW-Hungary.

Would you want your questions to be included into this interview? Would you love your questions to be answered by Chris Metzen, the Thundergod himself?  Feel free to submit your questions by posting a comment below. (Registration required) or submit it by email.

I would like to know something about the direction of High Elves and if the Silver Covenant will have a greater use sometime.

Have the folloing questions for the following medias:

DIABLO

-It was something of a revelation for Trag’Oul in the Sin War Trilogy as to the existance of worlds beyond Sanctuary, albeit with Sanctuary being of great importance (aside from being the focal point for Heaven and Hell in regards to converting Man to their causes). Any idea when, or rather if, this will be elaborated on? Diablo III perhaps?

-It was mentioned that DIII will end the current storyline of the series and new ones will develop after it. Will these knew storylines be in its expansion packs, or further in the future?

-Diablo’s been lacking in expanded media for awhile. Can we expect this to be rectified?

-The Sin War ended around 4000 years before Diablo sent Tristiram to hell (no pun intended), yet the events of the games and books surrounding them take place in the 13th Century. I can’t help but wonder what Year 0 is, since the Sin War obviously wasn’t that point.

-How does ‘Demonsbane’ stand in current Diablo lore? It supposedly takes place in the Sin War, but the dynamic is exceptionally different from the one portrayed in Knaak’s trilogy. Should it even be taken as canon anymore?

-20 years is a long time after the Prime Evils were out and about. Will be learning anything about this interbellum period? Or will DIII and any supporting material be more along the lines of the here and now?

STARCRAFT

-What’s the exact timing of the ‘StarCraft: Frontline’ series. If we go by ‘Why We Fight’ we can assume that they all occur post DTS, which had the first major zerg attack (Dead Man’s Rock) and ‘Newsworthy’ takes place sometime in June, 2505 (as per Mengsk’s inaguration being in early July, 2500, as per current timeline projections). It would thus be logical to assume that as per WWF’s timing, the stories take place chronologically after it, leading up to SCII. However, this is still an assumption and clarification would be appreciated.

-The original manual and ‘Shadow Hunters’ mention the protoss being in contact with other sentient species, and the kalathi and tagal have been mentioned in the colossus backstory and StarCraft beta material respectively. However, we’ve seen nothing of them throughout StarCraft history and as far as we can tell, the only other sentient species terrans know of are the protoss and zerg. Obviously StarCraft has had the ‘sacred trinity’ of the playable races from day 1, plus the “mysterious fourth” (xel’naga), but is there any chance we might learn more or even see these races at some point in the future?

-SCII will presumably answer the questions we’ve been pondering over since 1998 (xel’naga, hybrids, Duran…). However, will it be more of a wrap up akin to Diablo III, with storylines tied up and a new dynamic setting on the Koprulu Sector? Or will the storyline be more continuous, with some questions being answered and others being raised? Can we even expect anything beyond SCII (yes, this is presumptuous, but while Diablo III has been confirmed as NOT being the last game in the ‘Diablo’ series, the SCII trilogy games haven’t been given similar treatment).

-One of the most pressing contradictions is the nature of Korhal’s destruction. The manual claims that missiles launched from Tarsonis destroyed it, with a death toll of 5 million. Other sources claim that battlecruisers dropped the missiles with a death toll of 35 million. Care to clarify?

-According to Alternity: StarCraft eddition, Dylar IV is a desert world. According to ‘I, Mengsk’ and implied by the BW board game however, it’s a gas giant. Is Alternity retconned? Come to think of it, was it ever considered official lore in the first place?

-You’re apparantly writing a Jim Raynor story for Vol. 4 of ‘Frontline’. Can you tell us anything about this?

-StarCraft: Ghost. Yes, it’s being novelized by DeCandido, but still…

WARCRAFT

-Perhaps it’s safe to say that the blood elves aren’t as different from the high elves as they once were, given the restoration of the Sunwell and the blood knights’ new creed. However, tension clearly still exists, as per the Silver Covenant and the antagonism between Vereesa and Zandarin in ‘Night of the Dragon’. Care to elaborate on this?

-What’s the exact timing of the ‘Warcraft: Legends’ series? If we go by Trag we can assume that they take more or less simultaniously, or just before, the start of ‘Wrath of the Lich King’. However, at least one story was outside this timeframe, so I’m wondering where the others fall in.

-At this point in time, there’s two takes on the timeline floating around. Tidbits aside, one (Blizzard’s) place WoW as beginning in the Year 25 (after the opening of the Dark Portal) while the RPG one places WoW as beginning in the Year 30. Care to clarify this?

-Any indication as to where the storyline might go after WoTLK? Bit early to ask, but just wondering…

Questions for Metzen:

- What’s the status of the Warcraft film? Has a script been written yet?

- Is there ANY chance, any at all, that Robert Clotworthy may yet reprise his role as Jim Raynor in Starcraft 2? Or is the decision to replace him final?

- Are you personally doing any work on the “top-secret” MMO that Blizzard has been working on, or are you focusing on the existing three projects/franchises? Can you tell us anything about the new MMO?

09:16 AM

-We know Nefarian was “slain by brave fighters” (Night of the Dragon). Are we going to see any more characters/bosses be killed by players lorewise?

-What is Illidan’s status in the time of Wrath of the Lich King?

-Are we going to see the World Tree Nordrassil healed as was hinted in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne?
