The Game Design Expo 2011 was held on Saturday, January 22 at the Vancity Theatre — Vancouver International Film Centre (1181 Seymour St., Vancouver, BC). It’s fifth annual celebration was described as the most packed schedule ever. A ticket sold-out event.

Among the speakers was Blizzard Entertainment Lead Content Designer Cory Stockton who closed the event with his programmed topic: THE BIG PICTURE: MACRO DESIGN IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT.

In this topic, Cory explains how specific software can be used to shorten the design process and catch errors before they happen; and provided an in-depth look at how the World of Warcraft team uses macro design to shorten their design schedule, keep the big picture in mind, and pitch ideas to other members of the team.

“World of Warcraft is a gigantic undertaking,” he said. “It’s really easy to get lost in the details of something and get caught up in that one specific thing instead of seeing everything on the game and everything you’re working on.”

THE BIG PICTURE: MACRO DESIGN IN WORLD OF WARCRAFT

Cory Stockton, Lead Content Designer, Blizzard Entertainment (6:00pm-7:00pm)

A solid macro design is at the foundation of almost everything we do on World of Warcraft. In this talk, Cory will provide an in-depth look at how the World of Warcraft design team uses macro design to shorten our design schedule, keep the big picture in mind and sell ideas to other members of the team. The talk will cover the use of specific software, tools and how we use them to create an overview of what we want to do, long before we commit to it.
